On Sunday morning in Athens, tragedy befell the Georgia football team. Two members of their family, offensive lineman Devin Willock and a recruiting staff member, were killed in a car wreck in the early hours. The incident was confirmed by the university with sorrowful acknowledgement.
A sadly fatal crash Saturday morning has left two members of University of Georgia’s football program dead. Around 2:45am Sunday, a Ford Expedition traveling south on Barnett Shoals Road lost control and took a turn for the worse when the driver hit two power poles and several trees. As a result, driver Chandler LeCroy was killed on impact while passenger Devin Willock was killed at the scene. Furthermore, two other members within the program were injured in the crash as well but remain in stable condition.
Cause of death for both LeCroy and Willock are due to their severe injuries from the incident. This is an incredibly heartbreaking loss for everyone involved and a reminder of how quickly and unexpectedly things can change. The Athletic Association for University of Georgia contributed a statement in which it said that “the entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss.” Our thoughts are with them all during this difficult time.
Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program and our athletic department. We ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers during this very difficult time.
The UGA Athletic Association will work with our medical team as well as our mental health and performance personnel to make sure we are providing the best support possible for our staff and student-athletes who are processing this grief. We can provide no further comment at this time but ask that everyone continue to keep those involved in your prayers.”
On Saturday, the football team celebrated its National Championship victory with a parade and ceremony inside Sanford Stadium. In spite of the celebratory atmosphere however, the day was tinged with sadness for the team – tragic word had reached them just before the parade that their teammate Devin Willock and Chad had passed away . Willock was a beloved redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from New Milford and he had played in all of season-long game plus some Southeastern Conference Championships and College Football Playoff games.
