Cataldi is the co-author of The Great Philadelphia Sports Debate with fellow WIP host Glen Macnow. He has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes for his sports writing. The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia inducted Cataldi into their Hall of Fame in 2012. On October 6, 2021, at 8 am, Angelo Cataldi announced that he will retire from WIP radio on December 31, 2022.
Cataldi’s show frequently receives calls from former Philadelphia Mayor and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and the late U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, both Eagles fans. During the 2004 U.S. presidential election, Cataldi ripped President George W. Bush as a “bully” for his stance favoring restriction of freedom of speech on radio and television, and Senator John Kerry as a “phony” for questionable financial dealings, and wrote Rendell’s name in for President.
Recently Cataldi has had U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy on the show several times, stemming from Murphy’s sole dissenting vote on the House Resolution congratulating the Giants for winning the Super Bowl in February 2008. In August 1999, Cataldi was arrested for not having a beach tag at the beach in Avalon, New Jersey. Cataldi then proceeded to work with state legislation to challenge the legality of beach tags.
On July 6, 2008, Angelo and the Morning Crew launched a campaign to get Philadelphia Phillies’ outfielder Pat Burrell into the 2008 MLB All-Star Game. Despite four pre-selected fans spending over 50 hours straight doing nothing but voting for Pat Burrell at Harry the K’s in Citizens Bank Park, Burrell was not named to the team.
In 2019, Cataldi launched a campaign to pressure the Philadelphia Phillies to fire their manager, Gabe Kapler, despite the fact that the 2019 season was the most successful Phillies season since 2011. After Kapler was fired, Cataldi suggested that Joe Girardi become their next manager. The Phillies indeed hired Girardi, who then set multiple records for how poorly his bullpen performed in 2020 and 2021. Girardi ended up fired in 2022, with a worse Phillies record than his predecessor. Kapler won the 2021 Manager of the Year award.
